The creative economy has a structure. Most designers never see it. Cuatro Gatos Creatives builds workshops, tools and mentoring that make that structure legible — so designers can navigate it with confidence.
Design education produces skilled makers. It does not consistently produce practitioners who know how to price their work, communicate with clients, build a pipeline, or navigate the intermediary layer that controls a significant share of professional opportunity.
This is not a personal failure. It is a structural preparation gap — and it shows up consistently across every context, geography and design specialisation studied.
"The management skills gap is not a talent problem. It is a preparation problem that design education has not yet solved." — Doctoral research finding, 2024
Each service addresses a different stage of the same problem — from understanding the system to navigating it, to building a practice that sustains itself.
A 3–4 hour participatory workshop: ecosystem mapping, personal skills audit, integration roadmap. Every participant leaves with a completed plan and a concrete 48-hour commitment. Available at open-registration events and for institutions.
Focused sessions for designers working through specific situations: a proposal that feels underpriced, a client relationship that needs clarifying, a first pitch to an agency. Single sessions and packages available.
Custom curriculum design and facilitation for design schools, creative hubs and organisations. From a single guest session to a full semester elective. Based on the doctoral research, adapted to your context and students.
Every framework, exercise and resource in the programme is grounded in original doctoral research. Participants are not receiving generic career advice — they are receiving findings.
The Designer Integration Programme is a series of participatory workshops for designers at the start of their professional lives. Each session is grounded in research, built around practical tools, and followed by a 30-day action period.
Equal Society Mission Day. A 3-hour morning workshop session at Natlab, Eindhoven. Limited to 10 participants. Organised in partnership with Dutch Design Week.

Between 2021 and 2024, I studied why talented designers struggle to build sustainable practices — and what actually helps. That research is complete. The practice it produced is still growing. The answer, consistently, was not more talent or harder work. It was access to knowledge about how the system works.
Most designers graduate without ever encountering the intermediary layer of the creative economy — the agencies, funds and organisations that control a significant share of professional opportunity. They learn about portfolios and clients. They do not learn about the infrastructure between them.
"I am not a career coach who happens to know about design. I am a design researcher who has studied the exact problem these participants are living — and built a programme from the evidence."
Cuatro Gatos Creatives is the practice I built to make that research useful — in workshops, in mentoring, in published writing, and in programmes for design schools that want to give their students what their curriculum currently does not.
If you want to bring this programme to your institution — as a guest workshop, a semester elective, or a custom professional development series — get in touch. The research is adaptable to context.
Register your interest for the next open workshop, or enquire about one-to-one mentoring. If you are working through a specific situation, a single session is often enough to move forward.
